Chitosan Oligosaccharides in Soybean Production

(Excluding seed soaking and seed coating treatments)

Chitosanoligosaccharides are watersoluble, highlyactive natural biostimulants. Unlike highmolecularweight chitosan, they require no acid dissolution and deliver faster field performance. Apart from seed soaking and seed coating, chitosanoligosaccharides have wellestablished practical applications throughout soybean growing cycle, including plant maintenance, rhizosphere improvement, stress resistance, disease prevention, yieldquality promotion, phytotoxicity remediation and postharvest preservation. They are suitable for conventional largescale soybean farming, salinealkali land cultivation and continuouscropping fields. It serves as a key auxiliary agent for green and organic soybean production, and is widely adopted in major soybeanplanting regions such as South America.

1. Foliar Spraying During Growing Stage: Promote Branching, Preserve Flowers & Pods, Improve Photosynthesis and Reduce Disease Risk

Foliar spraying is the mostefficient and stable application method for soybean during vegetative and reproductive stages. It regulates plant growth rhythm and reduces excessive vegetative growth as well as flowerpod abscission.

Optimal application timings and functions

- Branching stage (V3V5): Boost the activity of photosynthetic enzymes and chlorophyll content, enhance photosynthesis and drymatter accumulation. Stimulate lateralbranch formation and thicken stems to build robust plant architecture, preventing weak and stunted seedlings for higher podsetting potential.

- Early flowering stage (R1R2): Stabilize flower development and reduce flower drop triggered by hightemperature stress. Induce systemic plant resistance to control foliar fungal diseases such as downy mildew and leaf spot.

- Podfilling stage (R3R5): Facilitate nutrient translocation to pods and grains, lower the rate of empty and shrivelled pods. Increase pod number per plant and 100grain weight for fuller soybean seeds. Field trials show yield increase ranging from 6.83% to 14.31%.

Recommended working parameters

Prepare chitosanoligosaccharides aqueous solution at 5080ppm. Spray uniformly on both upper and lower leaf surfaces. Apply 23 times in total with 1014day intervals. Avoid spraying under intense midday sunlight. This dosage is safe for soybean without growth inhibition.

2. Rootzone Drip Irrigation / Fertigation: Stimulate Root Growth, Boost Nodulation and Optimize Rhizosphere Environment

For continuouscropping fields, salinealkali soils and weakroot soybean crops, rootapplied chitosanoligosaccharides ameliorate rhizosphere conditions and strengthen nitrogenfixing capacity, mitigating yield decline caused by longterm monocropping.

Main benefits

1. Rootpromoting effect: Accelerate mainroot elongation, boost lateralroot and roothair development, improve water and nutrient uptake capacity, alleviate root ageing and poor vigour caused by continuous cropping.

2. Enhanced nitrogen fixation: Increase nodule count and nodule fresh weight, activate rhizobium activity and improve biological nitrogen fixation. Compatible with rhizobium inoculants widely used in SouthAmerican soybean systems for synergistic performance.

3. Rhizosphere microecology regulation: Stimulate beneficial soil microorganisms and suppress soilborne pathogens responsible for root rot and dampingoff. Relieve microbiota imbalance caused by repeated soybean planting, and improve nutrient availability in infertile and salinealkali soils.

Application dosage and operation

Apply chitosanoligosaccharides solution of 3060ppm via drip irrigation or flood fertigation at earlyflowering stage and podsetting stage. For severe continuouscropping plots or salinealkali land, dosage can be raised to 6080ppm.

3. Stressresistance Application: Improve Drought, SalineAlkali and HighTemperature Tolerance

Soybean is highly sensitive to environmental stresses during flowering and podfilling phases. Drought, heat and soil salinization are major causes of yield loss worldwide. Chitosanoligosaccharides activate plant defence mechanisms to minimize production losses.

- Drought & hightemperature stress: Spray 50ppm chitosanoligosaccharides solution before or at the early phase of drought / heat stress. It reduces leaf transpiration, conserves cellular water, mitigates leaf scorch and flowerpod drop to sustain normal plant metabolism under extreme weather.

- Salinealkali soil improvement: Rootzone application alleviates root damage from salt ions by chelating harmful soil cations and optimizing rhizosphere microenvironment, improving seedling vigour and final yield in salinealkali fields.

4. Phytotoxicity Remediation: Recovery from Herbicide & Pesticide Damage

Soybean crops often suffer mild phytotoxicity from common herbicides such as fomesafen, presenting yellow leaves and growth stagnation. Chitosanoligosaccharides offer a safe field remediation option with no secondary phytotoxic risk.

When herbicide or pesticide injury occurs, spray 60ppm chitosanoligosaccharides solution promptly. It repairs damaged plant tissues, restores photosynthetic function and relieves growth inhibition. Leaf greening and plant recovery can normally be observed within 35 days.

5. Induced Plant Immunity for Disease Management

Chitosanoligosaccharides are not direct biocides. They trigger broadspectrum innate immunity inside soybean plants. Fully compliant with green and organic farming requirements, they leave no residues and do not provoke pathogen resistance.

Periodic foliar application reduces incidence of major soybean diseases including root rot, leaf spot, downy mildew and pod blight. It cuts chemicalpesticide application frequency and input cost, and helps soybeans meet international export standards for safe agricultural commodities.

6. PostHarvest Storage Preservation

After soybean harvest, chitosanoligosaccharides can be used for grain preservation for bulk storage and overseas shipment scenarios.

Spray 50ppm chitosanoligosaccharides aqueous solution evenly over soybean grains, then airdry in cool shade before storage. It forms a breathable protective film on seed surface to suppress mould growth and oxidative deterioration, lowering storage loss and extending shelflife while preserving commercial grain quality.

Summary of Key Technical Advantages

1. Fullcycle application: covers vegetative growth, stress resistance, yield improvement, damage remediation and grain storage, independent of any seedtreatment procedures.

2. Excellent compatibility: can be tankmixed with foliar fertilizers, watersoluble fertilizers, registered fungicides and rhizobium inoculants without flocculation or antagonism.

3. Safe & residuefree: natural biobased material, eligible for green and organic certification, conforming to global agriculturalproduct export regulations.

4. Stable practical performance: no acid dissolution required compared with highmolecularweight chitosan; easy field handling with consistent effects on yield promotion, stress tolerance and disease suppression.
