Chitosan for Sludge Conditioning water treatment
Release:2026.10.28Chitosan for Sludge Conditioning water treatment
Acid‑soluble high‑molecular‑weight native chitosan is widely adopted for conditioning excess activated sludge in municipal wastewater facilities in europe. It is dosed before mechanical dewatering via belt filter presses or plate‑and‑frame filter presses. Being biodegradable, it can fully or partially replace synthetic #PAM.
High‑molecular‑weight native chitosan with deacetylation degree ≥85% is recommended for sludge conditioning. Its long cationic polymer chains neutralise negative surface charges of #sludge particles and build robust flocs through inter‑particle bridging.
Practical full‑scale dosage is 2‑6 kg chitosan per tonne of dry sludge (kg/t DS). After conditioning, capillary suction time (CST) and sludge specific filtration resistance (SRF) decrease remarkably. Sludge forms firm cake under mechanical compression with low‑#turbidity filtrate. On‑site jar tests are required to adjust dosage for fluctuating sludge concentration and seasonal variations.
Unlike polyacrylamide, high‑molecular‑weight native chitosan leaves no persistent synthetic polymer residues in #dewatered sludge. The resulting sludge cake complies with EU regulations for agricultural and horticultural land reuse. This solution has been implemented at full‑scale, especially in regions with strict restrictions on PAM‑containing and aluminium‑bearing sludge disposal.
Native chitosan is only soluble in weak‑acid media. Dilute acetic acid is required for on‑site solution preparation in sludge conditioning tanks. Flocs formed by high‑molecular‑weight chitosan are tough and resistant to breakage under squeezing, delivering stable dewatering performance under variable sludge loading.
To further reduce costs, it can be combined with other low‑cost natural polymers from Yudacentury. Please contact us for further details.
