Dissolution Method for Chitosan (CAS: 9012-76-4)

Step 1

Weigh 98% water by mass and add 1% chitosan powder. Stir thoroughly to ensure the chitosan powder is thoroughly mixed.

Step 2

Add the prepared glacial acetic acid (or lactic acid, citric acid, or hydrochloric acid) dropwise while stirring. Stir continuously for 5-10 minutes, then let it stand for 1 hour.

Step 3

After standing, a 1% chitosan solution is obtained.

Generally, a 1% glacial acetic acid solution can produce a maximum of a 2% chitosan solution. Increasing the acetic acid concentration proportionally increases the solubility of chitosan, generally achieving a maximum of a 5% chitosan solution.

Summary:

Regarding the concentrations of citric acid and lactic acid that dissolve chitosan,

Of course, common citric acid and lactic acid can also dissolve chitosan, but higher concentrations are required: a 3.5%-4% citric acid solution can produce a 1% chitosan solution.

Chitosan is a very good slow-release agent and antibacterial agent with wide applications in agriculture. Adding it to pesticide formulations and fertilizers can improve soil quality and prolong shelf life.
