Municipal domestic sewage first enters the pretreatment section of the #wastewaterplant. Chitosan can be dosed as a #coagulant‑aid in the #coagulation reaction zone before the primary #sedimentation tank, combined with traditional inorganic #flocculants such as #PAC and #polyferric sulfate.

Sewage carries a large quantity of suspended particles, colloidal impurities, as well as animal and vegetable oil from domestic discharge. Relying on charge neutralization and adsorption‑bridging effects, chitosan aggregates fine contaminants into dense alum flocs. Treated at this stage, the suspended solid load of influent can be reduced, part of oil and grease can be intercepted, the treatment burden of subsequent biochemical units can be relieved, and impact shocks to the biochemical system can be mitigated.

Usage and Dosage: Used as coagulant‑aid together with PAC, #chitosandosage: 8‑20 mg/L. Prepare 0.5‑1% stock solution by dissolving chitosan with dilute acetic acid in advance. Add inorganic coagulant first, perform rapid stirring for 1‑2 min, then feed chitosan. Keep rapid stirring for 1‑3 min, followed by slow stirring for 10‑15 min before #flocculation‑sedimentation. Jar tests shall be conducted to confirm optimal dosage. Over‑dosing will cause re‑turbidity of water.

Note: Chitosan generally works as auxiliary agent instead of primary flocculant, and achieves best performance when combined with inorganic coagulants.
