Chitosan and Pet food

Chitosan Oligosaccharide (COS) is a low molecular weight water-soluble product obtained by the degradation of chitosan. It has good biocompatibility, safety and non-toxicity, antibacterial, antioxidant and other biological activities. In recent years, it has gradually attracted attention in the field of pet health, especially intestinal health.

As a natural prebiotic, chitosan oligosaccharide can selectively promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria (such as bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria) in the pet's intestines, inhibit harmful bacteria (such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella), and regulate the balance of intestinal microecology. Enhance immunity: Improve the overall disease resistance of pets by activating macrophages and increasing immunoglobulin levels.

The principle of chitosan oligosaccharide's care for pet intestines

1. Prebiotic effect: chitosan oligosaccharide is a small molecule dietary fiber that cannot be decomposed by digestive enzymes, but can be fermented and utilized by intestinal probiotics to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), reduce intestinal pH, and inhibit the growth of pathogens

2. Antibacterial and barrier protection: chitosan oligosaccharide is positively charged and can bind to bacterial cell membranes (negatively charged) to destroy their structure, especially for Gram-negative bacteria. Chitosan oligosaccharide can promote the expression of tight junction proteins, reduce intestinal mucosal permeability, and prevent toxins and pathogens from invading.

3. Anti-inflammatory and repair: chitosan oligosaccharide can reduce the release of inflammatory factors (such as TNF-α, IL-6) by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, and relieve pet enteritis or diarrhea.

4. Detoxification function: chitosan oligosaccharide can absorb harmful substances such as heavy metals and mycotoxins in the intestines, reducing their damage to the intestines.

Precautions for using chitosan oligosaccharides in pet food

It is recommended to start with a low dose (60 mg/kg) for the first use and gradually increase it after 1 week. If soft stools occur, the dose needs to be reduced; pets allergic to crustaceans are recommended to use fungal chitosan oligosaccharides. Chitosan oligosaccharides can be used synergistically with lactic acid bacteria, bifidobacteria, etc. (such as the combination of "prebiotics + probiotics").

Chitosan oligosaccharides are non-toxic to pets and have good palatability. They can be added to dry food, wet food or snacks. The common addition amount is 0.1%~0.5%
